And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

¹⁴ And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

Recently, after reading a devotional from a Bible plan (shoutout to You Version) titled Scared to Be Known, there was the pondering of identity. How do you identify yourself? Is God in that equation? What does your identity indicate to you and to others?

Identity is a word that scares and perplexes some people. It challenges us to describe exactly who we are. Additionally, it is not uncommon to be a person who is still trying to figure this out. When it seems to hard, or too frustrating to know, surely, who you are, often there is a stand-offish approach to claiming your identity.

A way to overcome this, especially as a believer in Jesus Christ, is to know what He says about us, as His children. Jesus says that we are his friends (John 15:15). We are also known to be “God’s handiwork,” (Ephesians 2:10). We can interpret that as being made from Him and there being no mistake in our making.

Who Does God Say We Are?

·       Sons (and daughters) of God—Galatians 3:26

·       Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Jesus—Romans 8:17

·       Conquerors—Romans 8:37

·       Ambassadors for Christ—2 Corinthians 5:20

**These are just a few of the confirmations of who God says we are. Our identity is strengthened by the knowledge and the firm foundation of these attributes.

As God’s child, you can never identify yourself without acknowledging Him. He is the source—He is the creator of all (just look at Genesis 1:1, John 1:3, or even 1 Corinthians 8:6 to clarify and be encouraged of this)!

Challenge yourself to get more connected to God to solidify your relationship with God and your identity in God!
